Why do we see the same movie a hundred times?
How many times have you seen 'Avatar' or 'Titanic? quiet, has a scientific explanation.
Do you know by heart the songs of 'Grease'? Why is it that 'Pretty Woman' is the most visited of the day on television even though they have put it 24 times?
Well, the reason is very simple. As Cristina Antonia Russell and Sidney Levy demonstrated in a study at the University of Chicago, we just like that movie and that's it. And according to these two psychologists, every time we see something we like, we like it better. Because it does not demand too much, but it invites us to continue discovering details of a scene or of a person who did not see the ten previous times; we feel comfortable watching that movie again, as in family.
Children see the same movie one and a hundred times, or just one scene, because from the moment they are able to know it by heart, they feel comfortable with it. It is a feeling of familiarity.
When we get older, one of the reasons why we even see movies of our adolescence is because they bring back good memories. We return to live the moment in which we saw it, with the people with whom we enjoyed it. Every time you see 'Titanic' you remember the friend you went to the cinema to see her or if you see the 'The Goonies' you go back to that Sunday afternoon at your parents' house.
These two psychologists from the University of Chicago proved in their study that returning to see the same movie is also beneficial because they can help you overcome certain moments of your life: a break, a death, an end of a trip ...
They tend to be movies with a happy ending, and it's just what you need at that moment. But it can also be the other way around, you're sad, you need to vent and cry as if there was not a tomorrow, because you get to see 'Titanic' and you stay like new. That's why 'Noa's diary' is one of the most viewed in history.
