Auction for 709 carats diamond in Belgium
The gemstone was found in Sierra Leone earlier this year and had offered more than 7 million dollars for it, but its discoverers did not accept
A diamond of 709 carats found in Sierra Leone and one of the 20 largest discovered in the world was sent to Belgium to be auctioned in the city of Antwerp.
An expectation has generated the base price. Last May, an offer of $ 7.7 million was rejected in the African city of Freetown.
The sales team, which includes Pastor Emmanuel Momoh, who dug the gem, arrived in Belgium and will meet with sales agents, auction houses and potential buyers.
No other offer came at the secret price set by the government and the diamond will now be sold by an international agency in Belgium.
The transfer of the gem was under the supervision of a sales team of the National Minerals Agency, according to the authorities of the African country.
The diamond was discovered last March in the Kono district. It caused a great sensation and the gem is the second largest discovered in Sierra Leone. The largest diamond was discovered in 1972 and was 986.9 carats.
